                          Fish   in Meghalaya
                                     and
The ill- fate of Riwiang River at Nongstoin

it was the 03 ‎July ‎2019, ‏‎at around 6.45 am I woke up from my bed and I went straight to the bath bathroom to clean myself. After a year in Mizoram I have come to Nongstoin my hometown to spend my holiday. Today I was specially excited because of the fact that along with my brothers we have decided we would go for fishing in Riwiang River which is 21 km from Nongstoin.

we got ready we pack our things like cooking utensils and fishing gear and we went. To reach  Riwiang we needed a vehicle so we ask our father if he could lend us his vehicle, he gave us the permission to take it and we went.

Starting from Nongstoin we took the Nonstoin Riangdo road. The road was superb and smooth, even for a small vehicle like ours (a Maruti 800) we felt like we are travelling on a  vehicle with good suspension. We  stop at Mawlangdep to  buy some chicken.

We reach the Riwiang river at around 9.00 am. As soon as we reach we were excited and we search for a proper spot to do our cooking and to start fishing.  After a search of 30 minutes we came to a very beautiful spot where there was plenty of dry, clean sand. we took the spot.

My brother Johnson was a cook of the day and straight away he gathered sticks and shrubs to make fire and get on with the cooking, we  on the other hand got ready with our fishing gear (fishing hooks and fishing line  etc etc....).

The weather was warm and there was no cloud in the sky, we knew it would be a beautiful day and we will be catching lots and lots of fish.

On starting to fish, we took different spot so as not to disturb each other. The first fish that I caught in this river was a Schistura. Schistura are stone Loach type of fish, they live in fast flowing water areas, their body structure is such  that it is slim and it allows them to stay firm even in water areas which is fast flowing. They eat insects, invertebrates, shrimps, worms, Crustaceans etc. they have whiskers that helps them to detect their food and prey.  They can grow up to 12 centimeters. They are fresh water fish and they survive very well in the mountainous rivers of Khasi, Jaintia, and Garo hills of Meghalaya.

After few catches we had our Lunch of Rice and chicken. The day was hot, my brother offered me a beer. After resting for a while, we continued fishing. My afternoon catch was not much to be able to mention here, but my younger bother Balajied caught something different. He caught some Snakehead Fish ( Locally known as Dohthli in Khasi language). Snake head Fish are found in small streams in the hills of Meghalaya. They are found in plenty in paddy fields and rivers as well. They eat  mussels, insects, worms, chunk of fish, meat pieces etc. they live in fresh water and also muddy puddles. They lay their eggs in shallow water areas. Snake head fish have been in Meghalaya  for a very long time. I have seen these fishes since my childhood in the 1990s.

Towards evening we pack up early we move upstream of Riwiang river  as we wanted to swim in the river. As I move up the river I reflected, I was personally sadden by the less catch of the day, because even though we spend the whole day we caught only few. Having move upstream I realized that the water was not fresh any more, I also realized the presence of M/S Shree Sakanbari Ferro Alloy Pvt (a steel factory). This sight made me realized why the fish have become so less in a river when during my childhood Riwiang river was one of the rivers that had  lots of fish. I even realized that the taste of water was different.

Although we wanted to  swim but we dared not to any more. I lamented why the government of Meghalaya and the Village governing body of Riwiang locality gave permission for such an industry to be set up near such important water body as the Riwiang river. Riwiang is a source of livelihood for many people in Nonstoin areas and its surrounding. It is s one of those beautiful river that provide fresh water. its time for us to preserve this river and keep it clean for our younger generation, so that the water bodies and Catchments areas of West Khasi Hills may be preserve. If we could do so fishes like Schistura and Snakehead will be preserved.

Save Nature, save its living things, save water, save the planet Earth and save Life.
